The House

Les Deux Sources is a superb, newly renovated villa in the wooded hamlet of Roussilhe.

Its unbeatable location, just 1 kilometre from the centre of the lively ancient town of Figeac, allows an easy stroll to excellent shops, restaurants, cafés and renowned historical sites.

Set on a hill overlooking the picturesque Célé valley, the home takes full advantage of breathtaking pastoral views and light. Surrounded by one and a half acres of grounds filled with walnut, hazelnut, apple, fig and oak trees, the garden is home to many native bird species.

Les Deux Sources takes its name from the two natural water sources in the garden which supply the house and the valley below.

The Camino de Santiago or Way of Saint James pilgrim route passes by the property, so guests can always boast they’ve walked along it.

The Australian owner has recently completed renovations of an excellent standard, to provide elegant and relaxed living spaces, while still retaining traditional French features. The result is lovely, inside and out. Ideal for entertaining, it’s a haven for good cooking, wine and company. Visitors always remark on the happy, welcoming “feel” to the house.

The spacious light-filled rooms all have panoramic views. They are decorated with a blend of beautiful French antiques and high quality modern furniture, textiles and rugs. The emphasis is on comfort and lifestyle - relaxing couches, very comfortable beds, smart bathrooms and generous indoor and outdoor dining areas.

The Town

Figeac (pronounced Fee-jhak) is a stunning ancient town of around 12,000 people in the picturesque Lot valley of Southern France. It is the second largest town, after Cahors, in the Department of the Lot.

The town is renowned for its fantastic Saturday morning produce market offering local specialties such as foie gras, duck, hare, salmon, truffles, pastries, breads, cheeses, vegetables, fruits and Cahors wines: also for its squares and winding cobbled streets featuring medieval soleilho buildings of open top floors, two churches, one originating from an abbey in the 7th century and the Champollion Egyptology Museum.

The Lot region is the most quietly spectacular place in France - but not touristy.  An excellent road system leads to neighbouring towns and villages as close as 10 minutes away, each with a distinctive beauty and history.

  • Situated on the River Célé and 5 km from the River Lot, Figeac is located on a major train route, from Paris in the north and Toulouse in the South. The Figeac railway station is just 5 minutes from the house.
  • 2 hours north of Toulouse by train or car
  • 1 hour from Cahors, the capital of the Lot
  • 6 hours south of Paris

Figeac is often described as "the real France" because, despite its astonishing beauty, its prosperity is not derived from tourism.

The inhabitants have real jobs, - mainly producing and retailing food, working in fields of medicine for the large Figeac Hospital and making parts for the Airbuses. So it is not a hybrid touristy town, not changed by foreign owners as has happened in the Dordogne and Provence. This is the real deal, the real France, but the locals are extremely friendly - gracious, welcoming folk, tolerant of visitors who don't speak their language.

Dating from the 8th century, Figeac’s architecture is medieval and older, many half-timbered houses and winding pebbled streets. The town boasts a rich, ancient culture. The church of St-Sauveur off Place des Herbes dates back to 723 AD. In one of the two central mediaeval squares is the famous and newly restored Champollion Museum, housing a replica of the Rosetta stone, the hieroglyphics of which were deciphered by a Figeacean named Jean-Francois Champollion.

The other square, Place Carnot, reputedly used to contain the town's guillotine - these days it hosts the wonderful Saturday food market and both squares boast charming outdoor cafés and restaurants.

Figeac offers delicious Quercy food. Foie gras, duck magret and confit, truffles in season, amazing pastries, breads, organic fruits and vegetables are its staples, as well as the splendid black Cahors wine and regional Bordeaux varieties. Within and around the town are several excellent local produce shops, wine merchants, renowned restaurants and lots of outdoor cafés. There is also a lively market on Saturday where the local produce like foie gras, duck, hare, Quercy cakes, nuts and vegetables are sold. The local wine is the "black" wine from Cahors, robust and perfectly suited to the regional fare.

The town also has an excellent large hospital, the biggest in the Midi Pyrenees. The 2008 Tour de France's 8th stage went from Figeac to Toulouse. The little road 20 meters from the house is the pilgrim route from Le Puy to Santiago de Compostela.

Surrounds

Figeac is a destination – a fantastic base from which to explore many of the top tourist towns and sites in France.

  • Historical Rocamadour is a spectacular vertical village of monasteries, churches and now restaurants, clinging to a cliff. For centuries it attracted pilgrims from all over the world.
  • Nearby, have an unforgettable underground boat trip at Gouffre de Padirac, a deep cave which contains a subterranean river system. Canoe guides take you through water passages to massive galleries of colourful stalactite formations,

  • Visit beautiful places close by, including the red stone village of Collonges-la-Rouge brimming with flowers, the stunning hilltop towns of Loubressac, Tulle and Autoire.

  • Closer to Figeac are historic Cardaillac and Capdenac le Haut.

  • An absolute must west of Figeac is pre-historic Pech Merle, containing amazing caves previously inhabited by bears, mammoths and spotted horses - displaying cave art from neanderthal man and footprints of children. Open to the public, and not glassed-in like Lescaux, you can tour inside the cave and explore the mural paintings up close.

  • South of Figeac, follow the Célé river through the little towns of Faycelles, Ambeyrac, the beautiful little hamlet of Camboulan, then Larroque-Toirac, Montbrun to see the houses built into the cliffs, on to Cajarc - birthplace of Francoise Sagan and home to George Pompidou.

  • Another must is the spectacular steep town of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, offering some good shops and restaurants. Villeneuve de Rouergue is also very interesting with good brocantes.
  • See Roquefort cheese being made in the Combalou caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon and in the same region cross the Millau Viaduct, the tallest bridge in the world.

  • Restaurants – Figeac has many great cafes and restaurants, as do most of the towns above.

  • The 3-star Michelin Restaurant Bras, owned by Chefs Sebastian and Michel Bras is loved by foodies worldwide. Located in Aubrec, it’s 2 hours from Les Deux Sources. Closer by in Rodez, 40 minutes from the house, is the more informal, but fantastic, Café Bras located in in an ultra-modern museum.

  • There’s also Restaurant La Recreation in the sculpture town Les Arques and the brilliant Le Pont de l’Ouysse on the river an hour north of Figeac.
